CITRUS MULLED WINE

(Makes 7 cups)

For this recipe you will need:

  • 1 c water
  • 1/3 c honey
  • 1 teaspoon whole cloves
  • 1/2 whole nutmeg, cracked
  • 8 3-inch cinnamon sticks, divided
  • 8 whole allspice
  • 2 whole star anise
  • 1 orange, sliced crosswise
  • 1 lemon, sliced crosswise
  • 2 bottles dry red wine
  • 7 slices orange, sliced crosswise

In small saucepan, combine the water, honey, cloves, nutmeg, 1 cinnamon stick, allspice, star anise, lemon and orange. Bring to a boil over medium heat while stirring. Reduce the heat and simmer for 10 minutes. Then allow to cool and strain. (The recipe can be made up to a week ahead, if kept covered in the refrigerator). In a large saucepan, combine the sugar mixture and the red wine and heat until steaming. Do not let it boil. Serve in mugs with a garnish of cinnamon stick and a slice of orange.
